The most amazing things

16 Jul

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”

So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions before he died: ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father. ”

When their message came to him, Joseph wept.

His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said.

But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children. ” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

Genesis 50:15-21

My heart is breaking for my sister
And the con that she called love
But when I look into my nephew’s eyes…
Man, you wouldn’t believe
The most amazing things that can come from
Some terrible lies

– Fun, “Some Nights”

“Life is not fair. Sometimes dreams do not come true; sometimes you’re not the hero in the story of your life…
Life is not fair. But fair has nothing to do with who you are inside, what you dream about, who you love, what you stand for. Life cannot touch that, war cannot touch that…”

Cheese and gratitude

When I’m supposed to write, I usually avoid the process for as long as possible. I think the “What if?” process is the most crazy-liberating, and I’m frightened by the fact that what I want to say never comes out as well as I want it to.  Continue reading

Simple things that bring joy

17 Nov

I just finished rereading this book. The characters are collectively described as “unambitious, minimally employed, well-educated, and self-indulgent.”

More than anything else, I felt sorry for them.

Anyway, one takeaway was how diary entires can come in the form of lists. The list titles span from abstract (Things That Are Distant Though Near) to the somewhat pretentious (Things That Lose by Being Painted). The list entries are also purposely obscure (“a hot night in San Fransisco”; “a broken promise”), as if the writer was trying a little too hard to appear anonymous without fully letting go of the chance to claim ownership.

I came up with a list. I was not obscure – there isn’t any need to be in these cases.

1. The echo-ey part of this song
2. Perfectly blue skies
3. My dad when he’s in the mood to tell stories
4. People who have worked hard enough to appear effortless
5. Journal writing
6. Laughing with girlfriends
7. Planning menus for specific occasions
8. Taking a photo just once
9. Reaping after hard work
10. Time alone with God

Harry Potter and the Power of Design

6 Dec

It’s really a pity that the latest Harry Potter film – like the previous two – is stuffed with frantic action sequences. It’s also soggily weighed down by uneven acting and a clunky script revealing scant understanding of the emotional nuances of JK Rowling’s writing.

Yet the character and set design, as well as screen composition, are absolutely beautiful and – no other word for it – smart. Sensible artistic liberties have been missing from the movies since the time Alfonso Cuarón worked on the third installment.

Here are a few of my favourite things:

Crazy enough to work

I’ve decided who would be a FANTASTIC person to dress up as for Halloween:

G Dragon.

Now the bigger question is: which one?
