“They are all calm”

12 Mar

The children were all well-trained. They put on their protective head gear and crawled under the tables… None of them were crying or frightened.

– Mr Anli Tan, manager of Singapore pre-school EtonHouse International in Minatoku, Tokyo. (From today’s Straits Times)

One thing that stood out to me when reading news about the Japan tsunami this morning was the readiness with which everyone – the government, news networks, the man-on-the-street – reacted. They may not have been able to prevent nearly a thousand deaths, but there are few pictures or stories about emotional breakdowns. Japan is nothing if not brave and efficient.

Dear God, please watch over this country, where even the children are prepared for earthquakes.
